Description:

“13/8” is a collection of six pieces by Mohsen Namjoo. The result of two years’ work in the United States, it was produced with three musicians based in Northern California: Rob Shelton (keyboards), James Riotto (double bass), and Ezra Lipp (drums).

Three of these pieces are notable for melding the Persian classical mode dastgah-e shur with jazz, a synthesis that is without precedent.

Two other compositions, “Khat Bekesh” (Draw A Line) and the title track, are inspired by works from Frank Sinatra and Igor Stravinsky, respectively. In each of these pieces, the source material is merged with the seh-gah mode and classical vocal mode of Isfahan. Though oblique, Namjoo’s lyrics are critical of the longing of many Iranians for a savior to restore the homeland to freedom. Namjoo uses literary techniques and sound effects to satirize what he sees as a false hope, a hope that is comical and tragic.
